On March 30, 2019, 18 volunteers from the Clinton County Democrats came together to participate in the group’s first-ever cleanup of the Island Road in Lock Haven and Castanea Township.
The Clinton County Democratic Committee (CCDC) last year agreed to participate in the Adopt-A-Highway program offered by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT).
“Participation in this program is our way of showing that we care about the environment around us, while also continuing to find ways to give back to the local community,” explained CCDC Chairwoman Rose Reeder.
The CCDC has adopted State Route 1002 (from segment 0010 offset 0000 to segment 0040 offset 1278), beginning at the underpass of the Constitution Bridge in Lock Haven.
Prior to starting, volunteers met at Memorial Park, where they were treated to doughnuts. After a brief safety talk and donning gloves and orange vests provided by PennDOT, volunteers broke off into two groups. One group worked from Constitution Bridge to Memorial Park, while the second group started from Memorial Park and walked to the end of the adopted route, indicated by a blue adoption sign before the second bridge on the Island Road. The groups then crossed the street and worked back to their starting points.
“Although it looked like there wasn’t much trash to pick up, our steadfast volunteers made the most of the effort, and picked up everything from bottles and cans, to cigarette butts and candy wrappers. We filled about seven garbage bags when all was said and done, which was more than we had anticipated, and that felt good!” said Reeder. “In addition to helping beautify the public spaces around us, this was a great opportunity to get people together for something fun.”
The CCDC plans to hold two cleanup events each year, one in the spring and one in the fall.
