Marc Friedenberg has been nominated by the Pennsylvania Democratic Party as the Democratic candidate for the 12th Congressional District special election, which will take place during the Primary Election on May 21.
With the unexpected resignation of former Congressman Tom Marino (R-12th Congressional District), who was reelected last fall, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf announced a special election to fill the seat will be included in the May 21 Primary Election. Both major parties in the Commonwealth were tasked with nominating a candidate from the 15-county district to run in the election.
Republicans have not announced their nomination.
“We are proud to nominate Marc Friedenberg to replace Tom Marino in the 12th Congressional District. Marc ran a great campaign against a deeply-entrenched incumbent in 2018, and we are confident that he will take his experience from last year and translate it into success this year,” said state Democratic Party Chairwoman Nancy Patton Mills in a released statement. “Republicans should not take this seat for granted. PA-12 deserves a congressman like Marc, who will fight the opioid epidemic and defend working Pennsylvanians. Like we did with Conor Lamb, we are going to fight for every vote in every district and ensure that Marc will be victorious on May 21st.”
Marc, who serves as an assistant teaching professor at Penn State, teaches cybersecurity and cyberlaw courses. A Columbia Law School and Penn State graduate, Marc was born in northeast Philadelphia and now lives with his wife and two young daughters in State College.
Following the announcement that Congressman Marino was resigning effective Jan. 23, the Pennsylvania Democratic Party, in conjunction with the 15 county Democratic Committees that make up the 12th Congressional District, issued a call for candidate applications. Friedenberg, who won the Democratic nomination in 2018 for the same seat and ran against Marino last November, was the only candidate to apply. The 15 county committees recommended Friedenberg to the Party’s Executive Committee, and the Pennsylvania Democratic Party Executive Committee then voted to officially nominate Friedenberg as the party’s candidate for the upcoming special election.
